In the classical era, a prominent Roman politician, Cicero, was known as Rome's finest orator. During his time, the study of rhetoric had established into five major topic parts known as invention, style, arrangement, memory, and delivery. Memory, which is the ability to hold content, style, and arrangement in one's mind, is the idea of good communication. In this era, the science of mnemonics was developed by a rhetor named Simonides, to help speakers keep track of complex ideas. In a nutshell, the science of mnemonics is visual memory. The reason I chose to review memory as a concept is because my mom has multiple sclerosis which mainly affects the neurology parts of the body. She has short term memory and has a hard time communicating at times. Because she doesn’t remember everything off the top of her head, conversations even about the little things can be tough. So my mom relies strongly on visual memory to keep her sane. When she loses her keys, she has to trace her steps back and visual her memory in order to find them.
